The Reality of TV

People have told me horror stories of how they don’t have cable, or worse, don’t even own a TV. Fortunately, I am not one of those deprived individuals. My TV, DVR and I have quite a love triangle. I don’t know what I would do without either of these electronic devices…perhaps I’d actually have a social life, but who wants the stress of that? Certainly not me; I prefer the reliability of TV programming.

Now, I must be honest, I probably record/watch a lot more TV than I should, but I can’t help it! These shows have reeled me in and gotten me hooked with their story lines and drama. I am a big fan of normal TV shoes like NCIS, House, Lie To Me and Grey’s Anatomy. However, my reality TV makes up the largest portion of my DVR space. I don’t actually know exactly how many reality TV shoes I watch, and I think it would probably scare you if I added the up. I do know it’s a lot. I’m not going to ramble on and on about the awesomeness of faux/scripted reality, because it should be obvious. I’m just going to share with you a few of my favorites, in the hopes that those of you with real lives will be just as addicted as I am.

I love me some Amazing Race! It has all my favorite elements of reality rolled into one: backstabbing, drama, challenges, air travel and more drama. Now my husband always says that he were he to be a contestant, I wouldn’t be his partner. Well, I’ve got a secret for ya (and I know husby is reading so it won’t be a secret much longer), I probably wouldn’t choose him for my partner either. Not sure our marriage can survive the drama. Of course, I don’t think I am not sure I would do too well no matter who my partner was. I am not super athletic, don’t speak ten languages and I’m kind of a wuss. If you can get past all of those drawbacks, I’m the perfect partner!

I truly love the Real Housewives of Orange County; they are my favorite of the various series, though New Jersey is a close second. I love all that drama! It cracks me up that these people take themselves so seriously. The backstabbing and bickering are probably the best that reality TV has to offer. I don’t sell multi-million dollar homes, I don’t live in one, I don’t drive a Mercedes, and I don’t spend $500 on lunch. But I can really relate to these ladies, they have real life issues, such as do I travel to Spain or Italy for my spring break? I haven’t made up my mind yet, though I’ll let you know what I decide.

I wish I could be Jen and Bill's neighbor, or at least work with one of them. I'm not sure what specifically draws me in, but I do love their personalities and their openness. I must admit, Jen is my favorite, I mean she saves babies' lives for a living! How amazing is that! She also spends over an hour trying to pick out the perfect pair of sunglasses, I can relate to that.

This is just a short list, I could go on and on about the greatness of reality TV. Where else can you tell millions of people how much you hate your best friend? The drama is just awe inspiring. I seriously doubt I will ever be a participant of such a series, however I am more than willing to DVR each and every episode I can get my hands on!

Sickness and Sleep

Awww, sleep, it's a wonderful thing.  When I get enough sleep, I wake up refreshed and ready to take on the day.  There's a bounce in my step and a lightness in my heart.  When I don't get enough of this precious commodity  however, I tend to get a little crabby.  Tysen came  home from school with his first cold yesterday, and it quickly overcame him. On a normal day, Tysen is a great sleeper, goes to bed at 6:30pm and wakes up at 6:30am, it's a beautiful thing.  Last night he did not want to sleep, or couldn't sleep, and around 8:00 we moved him into our room for what I had hoped would only be a few hours.  As it turned out, he spent the night with us, though I would hardly call it sleeping.  He tossed and turned and coughed and wheezed all night long.  It was a rough night, and though he did wake up in good spirits, is staying home with daddy.

I on the other hand, did not wake up so cheerfully.  I am worn out from a night of too little sleep, and reminded of the days when Tysen was an infant and woke constantly throughout the night.  It's quite possible that  Tysen is making his case to remain an only child.

Now, on to greater things, reality TV!  I was quite disappointed in the finale of America's Got Talent.  I was a big Barbara Padilla fan.  Not only does she have some serious pipes, but she also overcame cancer and is pursuing her dream.  How can you not love that story?  Apparently some didn't, and voted Kevin Skinner, the shows winner.  I have yet to finish watching all the other fantastic reality TV my DVR has in store for me.  I am caught up on Glee, and love the campy style it has.  Hopefully this one will make it!

Perhaps too much of my time is devoted to the crazy world or reality TV, but someone has to watch!  Think of all those advertising dollars that would go to waste if I wasn't tuned in every week?

I've got a fun filled Friday all lined up, so I'd best get to it!

Back to School

Justin finally started school this week after two weeks of being on strike.  It was a stressful time in our house, but I full supported him in taking a stand.  There were members of the community who were angry with the Kent teachers for delaying the school year, however there was a great deal more support than anything else, for this I am grateful.  It is often hard to stick to your principles and fight for what you believe in, in this case, education.  The situation was made tolerable by the parents who understood that their children were the driving force behind the teachers' strike.

But enough about that!  With the start of the school year came the return of Tysen to Little Conks, the daycare at Kentwood, where Justin teaches.  Tysen loves his teachers and his friends at school, but that wasn't enough to make the transition back a smooth one.  His first day was a rough one; didn't want daddy to leave and refused to let anyone take him to the potty.  Tysen has been working on potty training for about two months now, and has almost mastered it.  I had anticipated that returning to school would mean a step backward, so his refusal to go on the potty wasn't a big surprise.  On his second day, today, Tysen let the teachers take him to the bathroom without any fuss; a big hurdle conquered!

I've got a relaxed night planned, lots of good TV viewing ahead.  Several of my favorite reality TV shows are on, I'm a reality TV junkie.  I'm not sure how to fit it all in, we've got Top Chef on Bravo, Toddlers and Tiaras on TLC, America's Got Talent (or so they say) on NBC, So You Think You Can Dance followed by Glee on Fox.  Thank goodness for DVR!!
